The storied history of Manhattan Beach, unfortunately, includes an incident where the Bruce family had their beach allegedly taken away by the city of Los Angeles. The Black family noted their ancestors Willa and Charles Bruce purchased two lots of land, but the city condemned the neighborhood and used “eminent domain” to take the property. Now, news surfaced noting California is moving to give the prime beachfront property back to the Bruce family.

Democratic Senator Steven Bradford spoke on the matter and said the bill put in place will “finally do the right thing, to undo a wrong committed by the city of Manhattan Beach and aided by the state and the county.” The property seizure of Bruce’s Beach was publicly and formally condemned by council members of Manhattan Beach in April 2021.
