RadioOnFire.com – A woman hiking the Billy Goat Trail in Montgomery County during extreme heat died Saturday in what is believed to be a heat-related medical emergency, officials say.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services and the U.S. Park Service were called to the Billy Goat Trail just before 2 p.m. Saturday for reports of a woman found unconscious with other hikers attempting to help her.
The woman, who has yet to be identified, was taken by helicopter to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda where she later died, authorities said.
With temperatures around 97 degrees in the Washington area Saturday, some areas felt as high as 115 degrees, with the humidity leading officials to believe this to be a potential heat-related fatality. This death would be the first for the Washington region.
