Supreme Court Okays First Federal Execution of Female Inmate in 67 Years

According to reports, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Trump administration in okaying Lisa Montgomery’s execution. Montgomery was convicted of killing 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett in December 2004. The gruesome nature of Montgomery’s crime included strangling Stinnett, who was eight months pregnant at the time, and cut her baby from the womb.

Montgomery’s attorneys have argued that their client has a severe mental illness and should have her execution called off as a result. But the Supreme Court’s midnight ruling lifted the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that had temporarily halted Montgomery’s execution. Montgomery is set to be put to death at the federal prison complex in Terre Haute, Indiana.
