RadioOnFire.com – Police on Wednesday identified the man shot and killed by police Tuesday night in northern Baltimore County.

Eric John Sopp, 48, of the unit block of Pheasant Wood Court, was shot during a traffic stop late Tuesday.

After police received reports of him acting in a manner threatening to others, an officer acted on a description of the man’s vehicle, pulling Sopp over on the southbound side of Interstate 83, near Belfast Road. When the situation escalated, the officer fired at least one shot, police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Peach said.

Another officer was present at the time.

Sopp was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are still investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting and determining how many shots were fired. Police are examining footage from the officer’s body-worn camera, Peach said.

Peach could not say whether Sopp was armed. Police have not yet interviewed the officer who fired.

Police are also looking to hear from people who were on either side of Interstate 83 Tuesday night and may have witnessed the incident.
