RadioOnFire.com – A funeral service was held Tuesday for 4-year-old Malachi Lawson at the Mount Zion Apostolic Faith Church, a family member released Saturday.
The services paid respect to young Malachi whose mother and her wife have been charged in his death.
The funeral was open to the public and started at 10:30 a.m. at 3505 North Rogers Avenue. Interment followed immediately at Woodlawn Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum at 2130 Woodlawn Drive.
Malachi had been reported missing by his mother on Aug. 2 and police announced his body had been recovered from a dumpster a day later.
Amid the search for Malachi, his mother, Alicia Lawson, told detectives that her son was dead and where they could find his body, police say.
Charging documents show that Malachi was burned during a bath, but neither Alicia Lawson nor her spouse, Shatika Lawson, sought treatment for the boy fearing that he would be taken away from them.
The city Department of Social Services reports that Malachi had previously been in foster care, but had been returned to his mother.
The couple decided to treat Malachi’s burns on their own, when nine days later, Alicia Lawson woke to find the boy unresponsive, charging documents say.
According to investigators, Alicia and Shatika Lawson then called a Lyft, wrapped Malachi in a blanket and traveled to a dumpster on 5500 block of Haddon Avenue where they placed him in a trash bag and placed him in the dumpster.
The Lawson’s then placed a fabricated 911 call, stating that Malachi was missing.
Both Alicia and Shatika Lawson were arrested and charged with 11 different counts, including involuntary manslaughter, first-degree child abuse, reckless endangerment, assault, tampering with evidence and giving false statements. They are being held without bail.
